Detailed Abstracts, January-May 2002

In late December of 2001, I began to experiment with a new series of abstracts. These works are from a variety of subjects but all based on the premise that every stroke of the brush has a precise intuitive position in which to be placed. I compare this to building a card house, after laying the first card, you make an intuitive decision about where the next cards shall be placed. An instant reassessment must occur before placing yet another card on the house. Failing to do so could cause the house to tumble. Similarly in these paintings, I am primarily focused on balance. Every brush stroke changes the content of the work, and in this manner the painting is continually growing. It is unpredictable, and ceases only when the structure becomes heavy to continue. As an artist I find my primary goal to be the creation of beauty in any form. In this series, that beauty is found in the organic fractal growth of the intuition. I do not concern myself as much with the subject, or even it's outcome, but with what can be obtained in a natural harmony when one ceases to struggle with rigid definition and restriction, and embraces a natural instinctual harmony.
